The 4-post lifts have a spring loaded safety pawl so that is a cable goes slack for whatever reason (breaking, load shift, etc) the safety pawl flies out and stops the ramp from dropping. Also, the locks are pneumatic so you don't have some gimpy little 4 foot long rod-arm you are trying to use to pull the locks back. And get a rolling jack, that way you can lift the car off the ramps for wheel/brake/suspension work.
